Touch Trigger Probe: the workhorse
Hundreds of thousands of coordinate measuring machines are being used daily in the world and 93% of them have touch trigger probes!
The most popular touch probe in the world is the Renishaw TP2-5way. This system provides the following benefits: it is a small light system, has adjustable trigger force, is compatible with all probe heads and it can be used with a manual or DCC coordinate measuring machine. The TP2-5W's stubby brother the TP6 is ideal for sheet metal work as it has extra large stylus travel and can carry longer styli.
TP20 modular probes are like the TP2 and TP6 with similar performance characteristics except that they have a module stylus unit which must be exchanged when utilizing longer styli to optimize precision. Their kinematic mount allows fast changes of the styli both manually or on a stylus changer. An additional benefit is during a collision - the module disconnects protecting the main probe body.
The newer strain gauge technology probes are now gaining popularity for companies requiring high accuracy combined with the capability of using longer styli without degrading the accuracy. The TP200 is a strain gauge probe about the size of the TP2 but encompasses a stylus module that must be exchanged when longer styli are used to retain good metrology.
