Machine Checking Gauge (MCG) for CMM performance monitoring
Most CMMs are typically subjected to an annual service and re-calibration by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or independent calibration service. Even though this procedure is essential, it can be extremely time consuming and also costly.
The Machine Checking Gauge (MCG) solves this problem. This tool is specifically used for CMM performance monitoring and offers a simple and time-saving method for observing accuracy at regular intervals. If service or recalibration is needed, it will give proof that this type of work is required.
The procedure is quick and cost effective. A range of pillar heights and arm lengths will also allow you to check the volumetric accuracy, which can be checked on both large and small CMMs.
The machine checking gauge complies with British Standard BS EN ISO 10360-2.
MCG systems allow you to measure the volumetric measuring performance of your CMM. This is done through readings, which indicate the volumetric measuring performance of the CMM.
The probe's stylus can be located in the end of what is, in effect, a reference "ball" bar. The probe carries the bar around a spherical path, and radial readings are then taken at different positions. Volumetric measuring performance is the maximum error between any two points in any plane, over any distance within the full measuring volume.
As long as there is a suitable adaptor, a special calibrated stylus can be used with the TP1, TP2, TP20 and TP6(A).
|Gauge||Description||Machine suitability||Total gauge error||Arms size||Dimensions up to|
|MCG1||Small checking gauge kit||Up to 1 m³ (35.315 ft³)||±0.5 µm (±0.00002 in)||Up to 380 mm||X 537 |
|MCG2||Comprehensive checking gauge kit||1 m³ (35 ft³)||±0.5 µm (±0.00002 in)||Up to 685 mm||X 986 |
MCG Tools analyzing spreadsheet
The MCG Tools spreadsheet can be used with compatible DMIS metrology software. The greatest benefit of this spreadsheet is that it can report the current state of your CMM. This will allow you to perform preventative maintenance before problems even take place.
This particular spreadsheet provides all the necessary tools for you to create a part program; it can import a results file during the program run and report various metrology characteristics of your CMM.
Furthermore, the spreadsheet will also determine the volumetric accuracy of your CMM; it will maintain a historical overview where you can spot changes through trend analysis.
