The SmartScope® M-Series represents a new standard in video and multisensor measurement, combining advanced optical technology with flexible sensor integration to support a wide range of inspection applications.
Designed for both speed and precision, the system enables accurate measurement of complex parts using optical, laser, and tactile sensors within a single platform. This reduces the need for multiple setups while improving measurement consistency across different feature types.
With high-resolution imaging, intuitive software, and adaptable configurations, especially when paired with advanced CMM software solutions, the M-Series helps manufacturers streamline inspection workflows, reduce cycle times, and maintain reliable measurement results across production environments.
The Renishaw Equator-X is the latest evolution of Renishaw’s flexible gauging systems, engineered to support larger parts, tighter tolerances, and fully automated production environments. Designed for the shop floor, it enables fast, repeatable measurement without interrupting production flow, especially when paired with advanced CMM software solutions.
Unlike traditional hard gauges, the Equator-X delivers both flexibility and speed through a dual-method approach. Users can switch between absolute measurement and comparative gauging within the same system, allowing them to adapt to different production needs without changing equipment.
This combination of speed, adaptability, and consistency makes it easier to manage part variation, respond to design changes, and maintain quality in real time, directly where parts are being produced.

The SmartScope M-Series is OGP's advanced video and multisensor measurement system, designed to inspect complex parts using optical, laser, and tactile sensors on a single platform. It combines the patented IntelliCentric™-M fixed-lens optical system with a 20-megapixel camera, Virtual Zoom technology, and ZONE3® metrology software, making it well suited for high-precision inspection of mixed geometries in aerospace, automotive, medical, and electronics manufacturing.
The SmartScope M-Series is designed and manufactured in the United States by Optical Gaging Products (OGP), part of Quality Vision International (QVI). OGP is the original developer of the SmartScope product line and also produces companion systems including SmartScope SP, SmartScope Quest, ShapeGrabber 3D scanners, and the FlexPoint multisensor CMM. In Canada, SmartScope systems are sold, installed, and supported by CMMXYZ.
The IntelliCentric™-M is a patented fixed-lens optical system used on the SmartScope M-Series, paired with a 20-megapixel camera. Because the lens is fixed rather than mechanically zoomed, it requires less maintenance, holds calibration longer, and delivers more consistent imaging across the depth of field. The high-resolution sensor captures fine detail without the wear and drift associated with moving optical components.
Virtual Zoom is a software-driven magnification system on the SmartScope M-Series that changes magnification instantly, with no mechanical lens movement. Traditional mechanical zoom systems require the lens assembly to physically move and then settle, adding cycle time and introducing potential drift. Virtual Zoom maintains measurement resolution across the magnification range while eliminating mechanical delays, making inspection routines faster and more repeatable.
All three are OGP video/multisensor systems, but they target different needs. The M-Series is the advanced multisensor platform built for complex measurement applications and the highest level of optical accuracy. SmartScope SP is a flexible system aimed at varied, general-purpose inspection. SmartScope Quest is a versatile multisensor system spanning a wide range of part sizes and applications. The M-Series sits at the high-precision, high-feature-complexity end of the SmartScope line.
The M-Series runs on ZONE3® metrology software, OGP's CAD-based platform that programs across optical, laser, and tactile sensors from a single interface. ZONE3 supports parallel processing of multiple features within the field of view, plus advanced tools including Routine Optimization, Apply-to-Similar, and Auto Path Generation. It supports both pre-programmed routines and walk-up measurements, making the system accessible to operators of varying skill levels.
The M-Series supports optical, laser, and tactile sensors within a single system. This includes high-resolution video measurement through the IntelliCentric™-M optics, through-the-lens (TTL) laser sensors for surface and Z-axis data, and tactile scanning probes for contact measurement of bores, datums, and freeform geometry. Combining these sensors on one platform allows complex parts to be measured in one setup, without moving the part between separate machines.
The SmartScope M-Series is offered in five base configurations: M7 (250 × 150 × 200 mm), M20 (300 × 300 × 250 mm), M45 (500 × 450 × 200 mm), M50 (450 × 600 × 200 mm), and M130 (790 × 815 × 200 mm). Several models offer optional extended X, Y, or Z axes for larger parts. This range allows manufacturers to match the system to specific part sizes and throughput requirements.
Telecentric optics produce parallel light rays through the lens, so a feature's measured size does not change as the part moves closer to or further from the camera within the depth of field. On the SmartScope M-Series, fully telecentric optics allow accurate measurement of features at varying heights without re-focus or re-calibration, maximizing the usable measurement area and reducing error on stepped or multi-level parts.
ZONE3® parallel processing measures multiple features within the camera's field of view simultaneously rather than one at a time. Combined with Virtual Zoom and the IntelliCentric™-M optics, this allows several dimensions, edges, and geometries to be captured in a single image without repositioning the stage. The result is shorter cycle times, fewer stage moves, and improved consistency across repeated inspections of the same part.
The M-Series is used in industries that require high-precision measurement of complex features and mixed geometries. In aerospace, it inspects precision housings, multi-feature parts, and complex components. In automotive, it covers engine components, machined parts, and production validation. In medical manufacturing, it measures implants, surgical tools, and high-tolerance components. It is also widely used in electronics and precision engineering for small, detailed parts requiring optical accuracy.
The most reliable evaluation is a sample part demonstration with CMMXYZ. Share representative parts or CAD files, along with your tolerance requirements and current inspection workflow, and a full multisensor routine will be built and run on an M-Series system. The resulting report covers cycle time, feature coverage, and measurement accuracy, allowing direct comparison against your current measurement process before any purchase decision.
