Purchasing a Used Mitutoyo Machine

With so many used coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) entering the market, many first-time buyers are considering buying used equipment. Notable among the available brands is Mitutoyo, a CNC Mitutoyo machine built in the 1990s or better yet built in early 2000, makes  an excellent purchase. Mechanically, most of these machines will last a good 20 to 30 years. The only parts of the machines that renders them obsolete are the control and software. If you are considering purchasing a used Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machines, the following models are recommended: the B series manual (B231 B241) or the FN series (both the manual and the DCC. KN series). Although all the machines listed were manufactured from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, they are extremely well built and will provide years of trouble-free service. Later bridge machines, such as the BRITE models, are not as well built, but will provide good service if looked after.CHN horizontal arm machines are now available on the open market. These machines are quite well built and are worth purchasing; however, they do not have the accuracy of the bridge machines.

If the used Mitutoyo machines are upgraded with PC-DMIS software, and if necessary a controller, the first-time buyer should enjoy many years of trouble-free operation. Pricing on most of the bridge machines (except the BRITE) should be in the $5,000 to$15,000 range. A used BRITE will generally sell for $12,000 to$25000 (depending upon its condition and size).
